The Marble Church

The Marble Church Denmark
Copenhagen, Denmark
With its high and unique dome, The Marble Church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Copenhagen. It is of joy of many Copenhageners that it is higher than most of the general buildings in Copenhagen. It is outstanding and makes this part of the city, Frederiksstaden, more beautiful.

Frederiksstaden was founded in 1749 under King Frederik V, who wished to mark 300 years of the Oldenburg dynasty (1448). A mighty church, called the Frederik’s Church, was to be built in the new part of the city, nearby Amalienborg.

The church was drawn grandiose, but it turned out to be too expensive, so the construction work stopped and the church was left as ruin until 1875. In this year, the richest man in the history of Denmark bought the ground by the State of Denmark and financed the construction and the houses around it. After some revised drawings, the church was finished.

The construction was finalised in 1894 and the result was a unique building that is definitely worth a visit, both inside and out. The dome is 31 metres and inside it is decorated with the most beautiful stucco. Outside the dome is covered in marble, from this the church got its name The Marble Church.

Inside there are many bronze statues of famous Danish cristians, such as Grundtvig and Kierkegaard, and there are more statues on the balustrade. Right under the dome and all the way around are the most beautiful mosaic windows – a master piece.

The Marble Church is open for visitors during ceremonial services and is open for visitors at specific times.
